from platinum to fiery, just in time for fall

Winter is quickly approaching but there is still time for changing color. We want to show off a major fall transformation on our assistant, Sheena. In three steps, hairstylist Jenni Renshaw took Sheena from platinum blonde to fiery copper red (new fringe included). Sheena started as a platinum blonde with about 1.5” of natural regrowth, so, to fill in the ends (non-pigmented hair), she added a filler color to establish a neutral base. The second step involved root to end with filler #2 to even out the tone and porosity and to add the depth needed for the vibrant end result. In the final step, for added dimension and shine, Jenni used Davines Finest Pigments Copper plus clear glaze. The addition of fringe was a last minute decision that turned out to be the perfect thing to compliment Sheena’s new look. Check out the end result below, and book an appointment for yourself here.

from brassy to classy: color therapy for brighter days

Sometimes all you need is a little color therapy, especially when fall and winter skies leave many days gray and overcast. But fear not—Aviary stylist Jenni Snyder Renshaw is a pro at brightening things up. Recently, Shannon came to us with brassy ends and wanted a color correction to achieve the more blended brighter and lighter tones she desired. Jenni used Minu shampoo and conditioner plus Minu Mask to repair ends and blew out/styled her hair with Melu Heat protector and finished using Oi Oil on the ends. Check out the change in the photo below, and here's to brighter (not brassy) days. Book your appointment here.

Aviary + BUFF Gilt Deals: A Resolution to Treat Yourself

The new year may not erase the past, but it does provide a primetime opportunity for renewal. And while it’s easy to watch your new year’s resolutions fall into the cracks, it doesn’t mean you can’t salvage a bit of self-improvement, new years or not. Our friends at Gilt City Atlanta recently introduced Rock the Resolution, deals to make whatever hasn’t fallen through the cracks that much easier to accomplish. And what’s a better resolution than a little R&R? Eh, we can’t come up with one. That’s why we’re thrilled to be featured alongside our bffs (and Studioplex neighbors) at BUFF.

We’re offering deals on our dream-worthy Rejuvenate Oxygen Infusion Facial, as well as our Alchemist and Smart Peel Facial. After your skin is in tiptop shape, BUFF is boasting $40 worth of nail services for $25 (you still have that tucked inside that one Christmas card, right?).

So grab your deals here, and have a happy new year. We can’t wait to see you in 2015.

no tricks, just treats: reward yourself with aviary's pumpkin facial

Alright, Atlanta. As you know, it’s pumpkin time. But pumpkin is not only for your porch or pie or, ahem, latte – it’s for your skin. All year around, we love our ALCHEMIST Smart Peel utilizing Sircuit's Youth Accelerator Pumpkin Enzyme Peel, but there’s something about the arrival of fall that makes it even better. And apart from it smelling good enough to eat, it comes loaded with healthy skin benefits.

By smartly targeting the skin’s receptors, the peel aids in getting rid of that icky free radical damage (which results in accelerated aging), and the power is really in the pumpkin. Concentrated pumpkin, or Cucurbita Pepo extract is rich in Beta Carotene and over 100 other nutrients. The other main ingredient, pumpkin ferment or Lactobacillus, works to exfoliate dead skin cells and impurities. All in all? It leaves your skin as vibrant as fall’s blue sky.

As a part of the facial, it’s a sure fire way to deeply cleanse pores, exfoliate and rehydrate. But seriously, don’t go eating it – we have a treat for you. If you show us this blog post upon receiving your Pumpkin Enzyme Peel, you’ll get $10 off, and, if you’re a member of Gilt City Atlanta, you can grab yourself the whole thing for $54 (not to mention the deals on Intraceuticals Rejuvenate + Atoxelene Oxygen Infusions and brow shaping that we’ve thrown in the treat basket as well).

Happy fall, friends!

triumph & disaster

New Zealand brand Triumph & Disaster is a men's skincare line that churns out products just as powerful as its name (inspired by a Rudyard Kipling poem none the less). Derived with nature but engineered with science, the brand fits the category of a modern day apothecary. They even have the cool packaging to prove it. Triumph & Disaster has a knack for finding ingredients that work, too. Blending local indigenous ingredients with scientifically proven and natural ingredients from everywhere from Polynesia to Australia, they've created a line of men's essentials. Their products range from peppermint scented Ritual Face Cleanser to close shave ensuring Old-Fashioned Shave Cream.

One of our favorite things about Triumph & Disaster is what is behind the brand (besides the handsome faces it's creating worldwide). Dion Nash founded the company on the simple belief that "ritual and preparation are worthy endeavors and that being well groomed is something of which to be proud." It's about time that men get some skincare loving, too.

Come in and snag your favorite essential or set up a facial to try it out. Here's to Triumph & Disaster, what Kipling called "two impostors just the same."

bkr water bottles, our newest obsession

At last, spring has sprung. Days full of beltline walks, swimming pools and patio drinks are so close that we can almost reach out and touch them. The sun isn’t your only pal come warmer days, though. And that’s where our newest obsession bkr water bottles come in. An ode to all things beautiful, bkr water bottles are for the simple, stylish and sustainable, against a disposable world and the chemicals that come along with it. As bkr founders Tal and Kate put it, “We were intelligent, fashion-obsessed, cultured women who were drinking out of cheap, disposable plastic water bottles. It didn't compute, but we were addicted. We searched and couldn't find a reusable water bottle we loved.” But that’s one problem we have no longer. These luxe little bottles are comprised of “clean bubbly glass and soft silicone” and feel more like the catwalk than a campground.

Why’s this so different, though? Well, the bottle itself is soda-lime glass, the sleeve and gasket are made of simple silicone and the cap is of food-grade polypropylene. All of these materials are BPA-free, phthalate-free, FDA approved and 100% recyclable. What’s super cool for the fashion minded is that bkr’s chic collections are released only twice a year, taking cues from fashion week and paying attention to what’s going on for both the bottle and world.

Another one of our favorite things about bkr is that their love of water extends to an overall love of humanity. For every bottle bought (and loved), a portion of proceeds goes to combating the global water crisis as well as the ongoing battle against cancer through organizations Obakki Foundation and Canary Foundation.

Rumor as it that it’s bad news to cheers with water, but we don’t think so in this case. Here’s to bkr! Thanks for making the world a bit more beautiful and for providing our newest (and healthiest) addiction.

kelly painter, aviary's new esthetician

We are so pleased to welcome esthetician Kelly Painter to the Aviary nest. After refining her craft at Aveda Institute, Kelly worked locally for Sweetgrass Salon & Spa and Key Lime Pie. She also operated an independent practice in Charleston, SC. Now back in Atlanta, she brings over six years of experience to the treatment table – alongside comfort, laughter and a healing touch. Book an appointment here, get to know her a little better below and most importantly, welcome, Kelly! 1. After earning a BAS at Georgia State, you sought a career that you could look forward to every day. Do you feel you've found that? What would you say is most rewarding about your job?

It's definitely a career I look forward to everyday. My personality requires that I care for people. Making others happy, makes me happy (the epitome of a Virgo). The immediate gratification I experience through healing touch or transformative results is by far the most rewarding part of my job. I am able to see, hear and experience first hand how my craft helps clients. That makes me grateful and thankful to have found my passion.

2. What initially attracted you to Aviary?

Honestly... the adorable studio. I was meeting another potential job option in Studioplex and saw Aviary. I thought to myself, "what an adorable place... I want to work there!" Luckily, Amy was in the process of hiring another esthetician and fate brought us together. Plus, working with more organic and healthy products has been on my to-do list. I'm so thankful for this opportunity.

3. Do you have any favorite tunes to play in the treatment room?

I'm really into anything ambient and ethereal, it helps take the client to a different place (essential to total relaxation). Luckily with today's technology, programs like Pandora allow for an array of amazing music. Long gone are the days of listening to the same cheesy CD's on repeat... thank goodness!

4. As an Atlanta native, what are some of your favorite spots - food, adventure or otherwise?

Oh boy, this is a tough one. Some places I really miss (Everybody's Pizza had the best pizza salad!) but here's a short list of faves:

Food: I love hand-crafted cocktails and light snacks at Leon's, plus I'm perfecting my bocci ball skills. For yummy comfort food done with an elegant twist we {my family and boyfriend} always head to Babette's on N. Highland. Also, my boyfriend recently became Sous Chef at Fox Bros BBQ, so no complaints when some amazing BBQ makes it's way home!

Adventures: I'm originally from Stone Mountain, so any time spent walking our dog {Biscuit} at "the mountain" is special. It's a great retreat for me, and there's just something comforting about that big piece of granite. We are really into neighborhood exploring as well. There are so many awesome green spaces in Candler Park/Lake Claire area! But on rainy days you will find us at the movies. Midtown Arts and the local AMC have everything we need (including awesome popcorn)!

5. And lastly, if you were a bird, which bird would you be?

I have to say an Owl. Twice an owl has visited me (literally) and brought wisdom into a confusing time in my life. It's crazy how spirit animals do that. They are so magical and breathtaking to watch. Plus, who wouldn't want to turn their head all the way around?!

true love is an oxygen facial

Thanks to Karina Timmel and The Atlantan for including us in this month's "Beauty Boosts." After Karina came in for an oxygen facial (she went with the Intraceuticals Rejuvenate + Instant Infusion with Atoxelene treatment), she fell in love – you know, just in time for Valentine's Day. Head over here to book yours. See you soon!

the oxygen facial deconstructed: rejuvenate daily serum

The magic of the Intraceuticals oxygen facial continues to woo us with the way that it immediately encourages more naturally hydrated and luminous skin. Because of this, we found it only right to dig in to what makes the treatment just so special – starting with the rejuvenate serum. The serum is, of course, a vital part of treatment, but it can also stand alone as a daily serum – even making the time in between facials that much more awesome. By delivering anti-aging ingredients such as vitamins A, C and E, green tea, panthenol (a provitamin of B5), squalane (a natural moisturizer) and a hyaluronic complex (sent from the tissue repair gods), the serum lifts, tones and hydrates. In turn, both skin's texture and vitality is improved in a poof. Because of these results, the rejuvenate serum is recommended to well, everyone – especially those battling dryness or those pesky fine lines and wrinkles.

We suggest applying the serum to face and neck at night as well as in the morning as it creates the ideal canvas for makeup application. So, whether of not you've experienced the coveted oxygen facial first hand, the rejuvenate serum stands proudly on it's own.

last-minute gift guide (don't worry, we've got ya covered)

As always, Christmas has snuck up on us and it being a mere week away doesn't mean we've got all of our gifts to give under the tree. Don't fret, though. We have something to bring a smile to everyone on your list. We promise. For the skin conscious - This is an easy one thanks to Clarisonic. The skin cleansing system who boasts the mantra, "Clearer skin is healthier skin," has been a favorite of ours for awhile. It works by using a patented sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second, which, in turn, removes 6X more makeup and 2X more dirt than our hands ever could. There are options, too, with the Clarisonic Pro (perfect for the queen bee – as it is one itself – and is only available through estheticians), the Mia 2 (Pro's baby sister is the pick for the globe-trotter, complete with a handy travel case), the Clarisonic Opal (palm-sized and designed to help around the eyes) and the Clarisonic Face and Body (the ultimate all-over skin treat).

For the lock lover - A Mason Pearson hairbrush is one object every woman longs for. After all, we know the feeling. The not mass-produced, coveted brush originated in London in 1885 and hasn't changed much since – meaning it's an investment that will last for Christmases to come. The brushes come in four sizes, eight colors and three pads including Boar Bristle (for fine to normal locks), Boar Bristle and Nylon (for normal to thick locks) and Nylon (for those super thick locks) and promises to clean hair, stimulate the scalp and produce a healthy sheen. Yes, please, Santa.

For the one who has it all - Sometimes gift cards get a bad rap, but there's nothing bad about treating someone awesome to a hair cut or color, massage, facial or waxing complete with a therapist who will customize each treatment to address specific needs and wants. It'll even score them one of our favorite above mention gifts – without the stress of picking it out. And to that, we cheers the season of giving.

give thanks for great skin (our new favorite treatment)

We’re so excited to introduce you to Intraceuticals, our new line and oxygen facial. Often referred to as a “magic beauty machine”, the Intraceuticals oxygen machine and serums encourage natural, hydrated and luminous skin. Ready? The Aussie brand was pulled out from down under by Madonna’s go-to makeup artist Gina Brooke, so it’s no surprise that it’s a Hollywood favorite (and best kept secret - until now). Celebrities such as Molly Sims, Kim Kardashian and Rachel Zoe claim they can’t live without it. Not to mention Justin Timberlake’s honest testimonial, “It makes my skin look dope”. We’re just glad it’s not so under the radar anymore.

Why is the treatment just so coveted, though? Intraceuticals provides a new kind of oxygen treatment. First off, a techy machine uses oxygen under pressure to deliver a cocktail of vitamins and antioxidants into the skin, resulting in instant hydration, volume, firmness and a noticeable lift. Relaxing and beneficial even solo, the treatment is followed by the homecare application of the brand's three-step hyaluronic moisturizing system – revive, replenish, and protect. In the session, the products are layered to provide perfect hydrodynamics, resulting in deep and ongoing delivery of hydration as well as those ingredient perks.

We’re also offering rejuvenate with atoxelene or “no-tox botox”, so go ahead and get a jump on saying goodbye to those fine lines and wrinkles. Atoxelene uses a natural amino peptide to reduce wrinkle depth without the need for injections. Atoxelene is offered as a standalone or add-on to the Rejuvenate treatment.

Oxygen on its own has endless healing properties and Intraceuticals just bumps that up a notch. While it targets aging and dehydrated skin, it benefits every skin type and we’re especially smitten with its speedy results (more defined face contours right off the table, anyone?) Head over to our website for pricing information as well as to talk with our estheticians about the best options for your skin.

Let the social season begin!

clarisonic, now from face... to feet

While Georgia may have had a confusing transition from winter to spring this year, we feel like the warm and humid is now here to stay and with that comes bathing suits, tank tops, and those tiny shorts. Oh man. We're thankful that our friends over at Clarisonic have us covered and this time, not just our faces. We're talking Clarisonic Pro Face and Body.

What Clarisonic aims to address this month is Keratosis Pilaris. We know, it sounds scary. In simpler terms, though, it's just referring to those summertime "chicken skin" bumps. In more proper terms, it's a skin condition where protein in the skin (keratin) forms hard plugs within hair follicles. And guess what? Over 80% of the population has it. So, Clarisonic conducted a 12 week study in which they proved just how great the body brush is. 100% reported an overall improvement in skin texture, 92% said they had a reduction in redness, and 91% noticed an improvement in dryness. All of these things get a thumps up, especially during a Georgia summer.

We love the Clarisonic system, which we talked about here a few months ago, and we invite you to come check it out and talk with Amy about any questions because again, the Pro Face & Body is only available through (your favorite) esthetician. Bring on the summer!

meet the birds: amy leavell bransford

We figured it’s about time that you get to know the birds here at the Aviary and who better to start with than owner herself, Amy Leavell Bransford. A “PR girl-in-recovery”, Amy found refuge and true love in opening Aviary in 2009. By bringing her history, personality, and (awesome) style with her, Amy created a place I don’t know what we’d do without. Here are a few of her thoughts on it (what she’s thinking while treating that pretty face of yours included).

You went from PR to skincare, what inspired you to open Aviary? After spending my 20s in a haze of smoky bars and nightclubs, I felt the need to counterbalance with something a little healthier, for mind and body. Plus I have an intense need to fuel my beauty product dependency and because I am also a PR girl-in-recovery, I still think the things that I love you should love, too.

What’s your favorite thing about it? Besides the energy, I love the aesthetic you’ve created (and there has to be a little of you in that). My parents are preservationists and the wood used inside the Aviary was reclaimed from my parents’ tree farm. So there are little hints of my childhood home. There is a piece of wood that faces the kitchen in the salon where obvious years of layers of paint are on it. One of the deepest layers is a mint green that had to only be available in the 50’s. My great-grandmother had her living room (now my parents’ living room) painted that color and the wood was a baseboard there. I like being reminded of that history when I walk by.

This cool, relaxing aesthetic carries over into your treatment room. What do you think about while saving our skin? I am usually planning out what I am going to make for dinner. All kidding set aside, I am constantly thinking about what new products we need to carry (back to the product dependency issue) and services that we should offer and how I can perfect what I am doing in the treatment room. I’ve recently been focusing more on adult acne. Treating and understanding what causes it to occur to women in their 20s, 30s and beyond.

When you’re not working at Aviary (and when you are), you’re a full time wife and mom (to two cuties). What are your favorite Atlanta adventure spots? We live in Inman Park so lately we are on the Beltline every weekend, either by foot or bike. My kids love going the Isamu Noguchi Playscape in Piedmont Park. Outside of town, we like hiking at Arabia Mountain and Sweetwater Creek.

And of course, if you were a bird, what kind of bird would you be? A White-Winged Dove.

here comes the sun

Finally, spring is here! Not only do we see it in Atlanta’s fine patio sitting, bicycle riding, beltline loving way, but in our hair and skin. Why? Spring brings along a big change in moisture balance. You know, the reason that city 800 miles from you makes your hair look better. Unlike the urge to sprint up the street for a King of Pops pop though, keeping your hair and skin healthy during the winter/spring transition is totally manageable.

Our friends over at EVO even have some tips and products. First off, they recommend their Happy Campers Hard-Working Moisturizer, a lightweight, leave-in moisturizer. The important thing here is the added sun protection that will keep your locks healthy during those beltline walks. Day of Grace Leave In Conditioner is the next smart move because (as EVO claims) it provides “100% more movement then a recently botoxed forehead”. Using a dab before styling will keep your hair in balance (and bounce). And lastly, EVO recommends Love Touch Shine Spray, their solution to dry, dull hair. As a weightless finishing spray, it magically adds both hold and shine. Thanks EVO!

We also recommend their Water Killer Dry Shampoo that we just got in to ease your “I wash my hair too much” woes. Skin takes a similar beating as we do the constant shuffle between outdoor warmth and humidity to indoor heat and dryness. To combat this “extreme combination” skin condition, Amy recommends 4 weeks of Dr. HauschkaRhythmic Night Conditioner ampoules as well as Dr. Hauschka’s Toned Day Cream as a perfect spring product. It moisturizes and protects all skin types with its unique blend of quince seed extract, beeswax, and rose petal wax. Have a balanced spring, friends (and don’t forget that sunscreen either).

our feathered friends: condition kettlebell gym

Forget the cup of sugar… our neighbor brings us a great form of exercise. Founded in 2007, Condition Gym sits in Studioplex and utilizes the kettlebell. We’ve all heard the buzz. The little thing that resembles a cool cannon ball is a great way to get in shape fast. Our very own Amy and Christine have even been head over heels for Condition for a while.

So, we know, exercise is one of those things that we need to do, even want to do, but may not always like to do. This is where kettlebells come in. Originating in Russia, the kettlebell was originally used by the Russian armed forces to train their soldiers. In the 1700s, they were integrated into the Russian Olympics, becoming a point of national pride and symbol of strength. So, needless to say, the art practiced at Condition is intense and powerful. It’s a way to lose weight, gain muscle, and get energized and healthy. The exercise even lowers heart rate and blood pressure all while providing balanced development of all muscle groups. And while the wide range of benefits makes kettlebells a good option for everyone, it’s especially wonderful for those who let their mind wander in a workout and the “I ate a protein bar for lunch” busy. Why? Kettle bells are quick. We’re talking dropping 600-900 calories in 45 minutes quick.

Condition understands the curiosity and wonder surrounding a new workout and Delaine Ross, kettlebell pro and founder of Condition, offers a free consultation along with an awesome introductory workshop for $10 (regularly $47!) with mention of Aviary. They also believe in overall, whole body health and are partnered with Personal Trainer Foods to give you a nutrition kick-start as well. Let’s get healthy!

a duo done right (just in time for valentine's day)

All right gang, not only are we in the midst of NYFW where fresh skin is in high demand, but Saint Valentine has his day coming up as well. We have a plan though. Dr. Hauschka knows our needs and has released limited supply, perfectly pretty day creams paired with complementary treatment mask trials. Whether new to Dr. Hauschka’s awesome products or a longtime fan, these sets are a great opportunity to correct and balance skin, find a new fave, and become acquainted (and fall in love with) the benefits of weekly mask treatments. It seems like cupid may already be here.

The sets offer well thought out daily (moisturizer) and weekly (mask) care for normal, dry, sensitive, and sensitive combination skin. Each duo even features a daily regimen to get you on track. For example, for normal skin, Hauschka’s team has paired Quince Day Cream with the Rejuvenating Mask. Quince Day Cream protects, hydrates, and supports balanced, healthy skin while the Rejuvenating Mask enlivens, refreshes, and boosts vitality (leaving you looking radiant). Rose Day Cream has been paired with the Soothing Mask for dry skin because rose nurtures and renews, sealing in moisture to prevent dehydration. Soothing Mask maintains moisture content and supports healthy cycles of skin renewal. Sensitive skin demands Rose Day Cream Light (a lighter version of Rose Day Cream that soothes and protects) and is again paired with the Soothing Mask. And for that sensitive combo skin, Melissa Day Cream is again paired with the Rejuvenating Mask, which has the power to calm irritation and redness. Melissa Day Cream softens and balances while reducing the appearance of minor blemishes as well as controls that unwanted shine.

Basically, Dr. Hauschka has us covered and with essential oils and simple smells included in each product, we’re even ready for the week ahead. And remember, these duos are in limited supply so we hope to see you soon!

your new bff

Are you sitting down? For something this exciting you may want to be. That’s right… all beauty woes have been solved. It’s called Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm, the brainchild of One Love Organics. And it’s because this magic balm poses the question, “what isn’t it?” Multitasking as a hair tamer, illuminizer, make up remover, moisturizer, pomade, primer for mineral powder, and skin soother, this 3.5 oz. jar does it all.

Skin Savior is made up 100% natural ingredients including pure, cold pressed plant oils, mango butter, and three critical extracts (chia seed, oat, and vanilla) that break down and cleanse without stripping the skin’s natural protective layer as well as smell quite lovely. And… it’s waterless. One Love Organics believes in kissing mystery products goodbye and only includes ingredients with direct benefits (H2O not included). Everything about it really just comes down to lovely…

The brand, One Love Organics, takes pride in their sensitive, simple approach to beauty. They hand make and hand fill every product right down to Skin Savior. But beauty for One Love isn’t just skin deep. Ethically and environmentally driven, they are accredited by PETA and Green America Approved Business as well as donate 1% of their annual net revenue to organizations such as CARE and The Children’s Scholarship Fund. And as if we haven’t found our well, one love, everyone from The Zoe Report to Birchbox has praised Skin Savior. Amy especially believes in it for winter chapped skin and with Atlanta finally (maybe) getting a dose of winter, we are in perfect time!
