we flock to: the farmer fund launch party

At Aviary, we love few things more than our community. And our community is founded upon relationships with local and global farmers—they help us plant the seeds for your renewal by growing the bounty used in all of our products. So we were excited to learn about The Farmer Fund Launch Party, taking place this coming Monday, August 10. The Farmer Fund is a new nonprofit working to serve the Metro Atlanta farmers who feed our families. By focusing on serving farmers in the face of natural disaster, they keep farmers farming and our tables (and stomachs) full. So, in celebration of that, they’re kicking off in the only way they know how—food, community and fun. Lots of it.

The night will include everything from beer and food from local breweries and restaurants to an apron fashion show, live auction and live music from Athens-based band The Darnell Boys. All is included in the price of a ticket, as well as benefits The Farmer Fund, so head here to snag one for yourself. We hope to see you there!

wonder city, wonderfarm

Prepare to engage all five senses this coming Saturday at the first-ever Wonderfarm. A celebration of our unique community, Wonderfarm will combine farm food and local art to benefit two special Atlanta nonprofits – Community Farmers Markets and WonderRoot. The evening will include a seated dinner curated by Miller Union chef Steven Satterfield and feature more than 10 of Atlanta's most crave-worthy chefs. Interactive performances, demonstrations and installations organized by WonderRoot will also be in progress.

It is Community Farmers Markets’ mission to develop and strengthen farmers markets for long term sustainability and meaningful community impact. WonderRoot also believes in inspiring positive social change through uniting artists and community.

In addition to a delicious dinner and equally enticing art, Wonderfarm will include a cocktail reception and silent auction from your favorite local businesses. And did we mention that this is the first time that the new Krog Street Market opens its doors to the public?

Head over here for ticket information and how to get involved. This is an Atlanta evening not to miss.

csa, d & a, and your new fresh food glow

You know what else spring means? It means unbelievably fresh food. And we have your weekly trip to the market beat. We’re proud to announce that we are in our 10th season of hosting CSA or Community Supported Agriculture. Starting on the 24th of this month, D & A Farm will be delivering the freshest organic fruits, veggies, melons, and mushrooms to our door every week to be picked up (and consumed) by you.

Since 1998, the idea of investing in a CSA has grown into a healthy phenomenon and all you have to do to get involved is sign up and drop by for your weekly box of D & A goodies. And don't worry about having too little or too much. Half and full shares are available. Half shares are $342 for the approaching 18 week season and feed those households of one or two. Full shares are great for households of four and are $630. But our favorite thing about it is the relationship it develops between the farmer and consumer. Not to mention, buying a “share” of D & A’s Spring/Summer harvest provides the farm with money early in the season, which keeps the cash flow up and our local farms alive. CSA is a way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer.

So, who’s D & A? Operated by Dave and Alan Bentoski, D & A is a 1st generation, small family farm right down the road in Zebulon, Georgia. On 19 acres of cultivated ground, D & A grows and markets over 80 varieties of certified organic foods. Currently, their food can be found also be found locally at Morningside Farmers Market, Zebulon’s Wednesday Market, and several local restaurants. We look forward to seeing you beaming with your fresh food glow!

Summer CSA!

I’m very thankful to see things beginning to bloom! The daffodils, tulips and Bradford Pear trees signal the rebirth of our beautiful green space in Atlanta, Georgia. And how I have missed my Spring and Summer veggies! One of my most favorite things to do this time of year is cook and eat outdoors…porches, picnics, patios, grilling. I am looking forward to hosting our third Spring and Summer CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) from D&A Farms.

Attached below are the details for signing up to the CSA at Aviary. You may mail them a check and sign up online at www.DandAFarm.com…once you are on the signup page, select “Other Atlanta Pickup A” and when prompted to put in a comment, add The Aviary. Pickups are Wednesdays weekly from 4-7 pm at the salon. We aim to fill about 20 spaces so sign up fast if you are interested. They will sell out quickly!
