Setting up is easy, but there's definitely a few steps that have to be done in order for things to work properly. Please follow the steps below and you'll be up and running in no time.

Please feel free to contact us at our support forums if you have questions about setup or are experiencing any issues with the theme.

Setup Instructions

Step 1 — Set Homepage

Go to Settings > Reading. By default, WordPress shows your most recent Posts (the blog) on the homepage of your site (like the one you're reading right now). But many WordPress users want to be able to choose a different Page as their homepage.

If you'd like to keep your most recent Posts as your homepage, you don't have to adjust anything in this step.

If not, where it says, "Front page displays," choose "A static page," and select accordingly for your "Front Page". Be sure to select "Blog" for "Posts Page". If you'd like the Launch Effect sign-up page to be your homepage, choose "Sign-Up" for "Front Page". Go to the Pages item in the WordPress sidebar to create new pages, which you can also select to be your "Front Page".

Step 2 — Create Nav Menu

Go to Appearance > Menus. This is where your navigation menu is set up and controlled. In the large panel on the right, next to "Menu Name," write a name for your menu (it can be anything) and press save. The page will refresh and you will see a new panel called "Theme Locations at the top left. Use the Launch Effect Navigation drop down menu to select the name of the menu you just created. Then press save. Now you can use the options at left to choose what pages and posts you'd like to appear in your nav menu.

Step 3 — Select Widgets

Go to Appearance > Widgets. Launch Effect is compatible with the standard WordPress widgets, as you can see from the ones that appear by default on the left-hand side of your website. Here you can select which widgets to keep and which to remove, as well as customize content specific to each widget.

Step 4 — Start Designing!

Go to Launch Effect > Designer. Now for the fun part! The Designer is now divided into three sections: Global Styles, Sign-Up Page, and Theme. That submenu is located directly under the giant Designer/Integrations/Stats tabs. The best way to get started here is to just start playing around and gaining an understanding of what selections affect which parts of the design. Good luck!

into the bottle: rose

Humans have always had a love affair with roses and for good reason. Rose oil and rose water are two of the oldest skincare products in the book. The Dr. Hauschka website explains the coveted use of rose oil and rose water in their products: “The flowers must not be allowed to get hot, otherwise they would lose too much of the costly rose essential oil. For this reason harvesting starts early in the morning and everyone in the Lalehzar valley that is not aged or infirm is roped in to help. Again and again the distillery workers turn the roses over to ensure that they remain cool.”

Apart from the boundless vitamins and antioxidants that can be ingested through a cup of rose hip tea or the calming affects of its aroma, rose oil and rose water have a long list of benefits when it comes to beauty. First off, it contains anti-inflammatory properties, which soothes irritated skin. It also includes a great deal of antioxidants that are proven to strengthen skin cells and regenerate tissue. These properties make the rose particularly beneficial to sensitive skin, but the love affair doesn’t stop there.

The duo also makes for a great moisturizer. Its natural oils trap moisture in the skin, decrease damage to the skin's elastin fibers and prevent wrinkles. These properties, especially beneficial to dry skin, help skin look and feel smoother.

The key word for the rose, in any sense, is gentle and some of our tried and true natural products thrive on the super flower. Dr. Hauschka boasts Rose Day Cream, Rose Day Cream Light, Rose Body Moisturizer and Rose Body Oil and Sircuit uses it in restorative retinoid crème Supernatural-A, repair and recovery balm Sircurity and protective moisture crème Cloud 9+. Roses are red, anyone?

Ashley Longshore does Anthropologie

I get pretty excited to open the mailbox and be greeted with the Anthropologie catalog every month. Like teenage-boy-with-the-swimsuit-issue excited. I don't know how they do it but the creative forces that drive that company really nail it. I often tell my husband that I am Fantasy Shopping as I flip through the pages, imagining how I might redecorate either my home or wardrobe with a Lotto of $200 or $500 or $1000 or $5000 and so on. So, when I saw my friend Ashley Longshore's artwork made into a Danish armchair in this month's catalog I got REALLY excited. Like I-went-to-high-school-with-a-celebrity excited.

Ashley and I went to Brenau Academy together and graduated in '93. We've kept up sporadically through the years but thanks to the Social Engineers at Facebook, we reconnected earlier this year when she was in Atlanta for an art show at Staceage. I love friends who you can pick right up with as if no time had passed at all.

Ashley started painting sometime after we graduated. She was always one of the most animated and rowdy girls in the school...and I say that as one of the animated and rowdy ones. It's probably what landed me in boarding school to begin with. I remember staying up past curfew in the dorms and laughing until my sides hurt at her improvisation of Janis Joplin. You could practically hear Ms. Janis rolling over in her grave...whisky bottle in hand, cigarette in the other. Anyway, Ashley has definitely put her affable ways to good use and she counts a few celebrities as her clients. I won't name who because, you know, the code and all that.

If you happen to find yourself in New Orleans, Ashley has opened a gallery there on Magazine Street. Stop in and say hello. Tell her I sent you...

The Story of Cosmetics: What She Said

This is one of the funnest and compelling little viral video pieces that I have seen in a long time. I don't have much to add, other than if you need help finding some good non-toxic products to replace the bad ones in your makeup bag, then you should book some time with your favorite Aviary therapist or stylist. We always aim to educate, not just sell products.

If you have spent any time with me, you know I drank the Dr. Hauschka cool-aid a long time ago. Dr. Hauschka Skin Care was my introduction into the world of a different kind of beauty than I had ever known in a department or drug store...and I credit my exposure to their products as the main reason that I am a practicing holistic esthetician today. So finalizing my certification with them means the fulfillment of both a personal and professional dream. This week marks the final stretch in a journey that started nearly two years ago for me. Yet, in some ways I am reminded of how the journey is just beginning. Today we talked about the gardens of WALA, where there are over eleven acres of certified Biodynamic gardens. The gardens employ seven full time gardeners who cultivate over 150 medicinal herbs, plants and flowers. Biodynamic gardening is what I would call "organic plus, plus, plus". It is a closed ecosystem that recognizes the rhythmic and symbolic relationships between: soil, plants, animals, humans, earth and the sun, moon and stars. Think of it as the Farmer's Almanac on steroids. Except that they would never do steroids because that would be a MAJOR no-no. You get what I am saying, though.

I am so inspired by the people who work for Dr. Hauschka...they are impassioned to say the least. But I'm also enjoying the company of 7 other estheticians on the same journey as I am, who are as inspired by the products that they use and the people who make them. So, I will leave you with this video...a little throwback to 7th grade science class, I KNOW. But get past the dry narration and you might find a little inspiration.

New Mother Nature (taking over)...

Aviary was featured in yesterday's lifestyle blog by Siel Ju on I haven't had a chance to meet Siel (she lives in LA) but we had a great chat on the phone back in November. This got me thinking about Atlanta's voice for the environment - our city's answer to the Green LA Girl - a socialite whose cause is to promote awareness about environmental issues. A spokeswoman for our planet, someone who uses their voice in many positive ways, someone who writes for different publications around town.  Maybe that person would be a woman with a well respected father who is a pioneer in the environmental industry and an advocate for private land owners. Perhaps this woman would be a native of Macon, Georgia but who lives in Atlanta with her husband and children. This person would certainly, most definitely, really appreciate what we are trying to achieve at Aviary. And I would want to work with her on a bigger level because in a town so spread out as Atlanta, we ECO-maniacs need to bind together to spread the message. Laura Turner Seydel, I am talking about you. I've put it into the universe that I'd like for you to be our client. Did you know that at Aviary you can have your hair colored using Organic Color Systems? Did you know that Organic Color Systems is 100% ammonia free, creating an environment lacking that burn-the-insides-of your-nasal-passages odor that is common in most salons? Did you know that this is not hippie hair color and that most people are shocked at how soft and shiny their hair is when they leave the salon. Did you also know that at Aviary, we use the best products available on the market and that are made with organic and biodynamically grown ingredients? They are also free from other known toxins and carcinogens such as parabens, mineral oil, petroleum byproducts, toluene, formaldehyde and artificial ingredients. Laura, I think you would LOVE a Dr. Hauschka facial.

The funny thing to me is that our lives are paralleled. I was also born in Macon, Georgia and relocated to Atlanta, where I live with my husband and our two sons, Miles and Rocco. My father, Chuck Leavell, is noted environmentalist and tree farmer. Dad even played your X-Mas Party a few years ago, which led us subsequently to have Captain Planet himself make an appearance at Miles's 3rd birthday party. THAT was a hit with the kids.

I know I could probably call in a few favors to make sure we get an introduction but, hey, this is the time of the internet and it would be so much more fun to see if I can do it when left to my own devices. So, here goes...I hope to meet you soon!

Please Vote for Aviary...we've got Style.

We were nominated for two JuliB Style Awards! You will find us competing against ourselves the Beauty category, under Spa Specialty. Hmmm, what do I like about us better...the AH-mazing Dr. Hauschka Classic Treatment that we dubbed The Euro. Or the anti-spa music that is quickly becoming a not-so-secret ingredient in our Aviary mix? You can only cast one vote...what a dilemma! On the one hand, the 120 minute Classic Treatment is unparalleled in Atlanta. Relax as your treatment begins with a warm sage footbath and gentle stretching movements for the arms, neck and head. The core of the Dr. Hauschka facial is the lymphatic stimulation, which is achieved using gentle, rhythmical strokes using hands and lymph brushes. Your treatment will be unique to you, as determined by a certified Dr. Hauschka esthetician, using products that are appropriate for your skin condition. You'll leave with a renewed sense of vitality and the results will be transformative.

On the other hand, when I set out to start my private practice for skin care two years ago, I made a vow to never play snoozy spa muzak. Instead, I set out to find relaxing songs to set the mood and tone, allowing me to connect to clients through another passion of mine - music. I met Christine and Sidney, and quickly learned we had that in common. In out treatment rooms, you will hear songs from Cat Power, Kings of Convenience or Emiliana Torrini and Celia Cruz. Sidney is working on a mix tape of our ever changing favorite artists. Don't be surprised if you leave with some new favorites yourself!

So I invite you, our dear and loyal friends and clients, to make the choice for our Juli B Style Award. You'll have to sign up if you aren't a subscriber but it'll be worth it. Juli B sends out twice weekly emails on what's hot and hip in the ATL.

Thank you!

Graphite. Not just your No. 2 any more.

I want to give HUGE kudos to the dynamic duo of Gavin and Alyssa, of Grafite Ink. Gavin and Alyssa did the buildout in the salon and are responsible for giving the Aviary that unique rustic modernism that we so love. They just launched a blog with some photos of the salon. Let's talk seriously about that bookcase in there. Wow.

One of the most rewarding thing about starting and owning a business has been the door that it has opened to other creatives and entrepreneurs in Atlanta. Gavin and Alyssa were a constant around the salon for about two weeks while doing the buildout. If we had more space, I'd make sure they had an office in the Aviary just so we could have their creative energy around.
