Summer Skin

From heat to humidity and all that extra time in the sun, summer presents unique skin care challenges. Here are three simple reminders to help you put your best face forward.

1)    SUNSCREEN

Seriously, we can’t say this enough: Always wear sunscreen. The number one, go-to beauty and wellness weapon is sunscreen. Be sure to wear at least SPF 30 on your face and body. When in doubt, reapply and while you’re at it, grab yourself an adorable sunhat. Luckily, sunscreen has come a long way. Gone are the days of battling with sticky, white paste.  Our favorite brand, COOLA smells yummy, goes on easy and best of all is 70% + certified organic.

2)    HYDRATE

Hydration is key to good health, and bonus: great skin. Higher temps and more time outside make it easier to dehydrate. During the summer, you should be upping your normal eight 8-ounce glasses of water to about ten to twelve glasses a day.

3)    MINIMIZE

Consider a pared-down makeup routine for the warmer months. Not only does it give you that fresh-faced summer vibe, but it lets your skin breathe and helps keep your pores from clogging.

Ready to get grounded and recharge? Allow us to introduce you to Julie Ann Travis. We are such fans of her shamanic energy healing work that we decided to co-host a 3-part series called Space & Beauty.

A: What exactly is a shamanic practitioner?

JT: Shamanism is the oldest form of spirituality on the planet, dating back over 40,000 years! A shamanic practitioner is someone with works with spiritual aspects of an illness or imbalance. According to the Siberian Tungus tribe, the word Shaman means: the one who sees in the dark.

A: What are some of the issues clients seek your help with?

JT: Many things! To name a few: Chronic illness (physical, mental, emotional), PTSD, releasing toxic patterns, empowerment, or simply seeking clarity on their life path. Basically, if there is something bothering you, there is a spiritual root cause.

A: Tell us a little bit about what we could expect in a session with you.

JT: All sessions could include one or more of the following:

Illumination: clearing and balancing the chakra

Extraction: removing crystallized or fluid energies from the energy field

Soul Retrieval: recovering essential lost part of one’s soul that have fled during past traumatic events

A: Tell us about your path to this work.

My path of Shamanic Practitioner began at a very early age; I have known since the age of four that I was brought here to be of service. I share a similar path of many shamans: the wounded healer's journey. Most of my late teens and twenties were full of chronic illness and deep depression. With the help of the beloved Q’ero shamans, I was able to step in and accept my calling to service during a vacation turned spiritual pilgrimage in Peru.

A: And finally, what bird would you be and why?

JT: I’d be a Robin. Since they are always in groups, it reminds me to connect with my local community. They don’t need to migrate and can make their home here year-round. Also, they lay the most gorgeous powder-blue eggs.

We first heard of Dr. Amy King a year or so ago when In Fine Feather did a feature on her. A chiropractor that approaches each client holistically, treating mind, body, and spirit? We were intrigued! Since then we’ve become huge fans of her practice Little 5 Points Chiropractic and happily discovered we are birds of a feather, too. Get to know one of our flock, Dr. Amy King.

Where would we find you on a Sunday afternoon?

Hanging out with my cute pup Bacon, brunching and exploring the city.

You just picked up your best friend from the airport and it’s his/her first time in Atlanta. Where is the first place you take him/her and why?

My favorite thing about Atlanta is all of the amazing local artwork we have, but if I had to pick a location I’d say The Atlanta Botanical Gardens. So on the drive up from the airport I’d take us though my favorite neighborhoods to check out all of the art, and then end up at the gardens to explore. I love the contrast of city life with such a huge and beautiful natural area in the middle of the city that's also connected to Piedmont Park.

What is your favorite place to spend time outside of the city?

Sweetwater Creek State Park or Arabia Mountain for earthing!

What are you currently reading?

I'm typically reading about 5 books at a time. Right now it's:

  1. Essentialism by Greg McKeown
  2. Awakening Shakti by Sally Kempton
  3. Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss
  4. Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
  5. Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar

And last, but not least, what bird would you be and why?

I’d be a hummingbird. They are said to be messengers of happiness, hope and joy. They lift us up during times of negativity while encouraging us to express love more fully.
