from platinum to fiery, just in time for fall

Winter is quickly approaching but there is still time for changing color. We want to show off a major fall transformation on our assistant, Sheena. In three steps, hairstylist Jenni Renshaw took Sheena from platinum blonde to fiery copper red (new fringe included). Sheena started as a platinum blonde with about 1.5” of natural regrowth, so, to fill in the ends (non-pigmented hair), she added a filler color to establish a neutral base. The second step involved root to end with filler #2 to even out the tone and porosity and to add the depth needed for the vibrant end result. In the final step, for added dimension and shine, Jenni used Davines Finest Pigments Copper plus clear glaze. The addition of fringe was a last minute decision that turned out to be the perfect thing to compliment Sheena’s new look. Check out the end result below, and book an appointment for yourself here.

from brassy to classy: color therapy for brighter days

Sometimes all you need is a little color therapy, especially when fall and winter skies leave many days gray and overcast. But fear not—Aviary stylist Jenni Snyder Renshaw is a pro at brightening things up. Recently, Shannon came to us with brassy ends and wanted a color correction to achieve the more blended brighter and lighter tones she desired. Jenni used Minu shampoo and conditioner plus Minu Mask to repair ends and blew out/styled her hair with Melu Heat protector and finished using Oi Oil on the ends. Check out the change in the photo below, and here's to brighter (not brassy) days. Book your appointment here.

bangs, not botox

We all felt that slight chill in the air this week, welcoming the transition from summer to fall. And, with such a welcome transition, comes the perfect time for change—whether it's switching out that iced latte for a streaming americano, or a new 'do. Aviary esthetician Kelly Painter welcomed the cool weather this week, warming up her summer look by adding bangs. Bangs have always been a surefire way to give your look a lift (literally), and Kelly's frame her face in just the right way.

Jenni Snyder Renshaw, Aviary's newest stylist, recommends using Davines Relaxing Fluid on damp hair to tame side swept bangs. Blow dry with a vented or paddle brush in the opposite direction your fringe will lay. Then, spritz some Davines Invisible No Gas Spray on the brush, and smooth hair back in to place. We can't help but say bangs, not botox to lift you into fall. Schedule your next appointment here.

welcome to the nest: massage therapist alexis shanks

Alexis Shanks brings a lifetime of experience to Aviary. “My mother was a hospice nurse, and, as a young girl, I would go with her to patients’ homes and gently rub their feet and hands. In my family, I obtained the name ‘magic fingers.’ That nickname gave me the confidence and validation that I have the gift of loving intent and touch.” But this anecdote is only one of the things that sets Aviary’s newest massage therapist apart from the crowd. For the last 10 years, Alexis’ family has run The Stillpoint Center in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Here, she learned of everything from homeopathic remedies to different modalities of massage. To further this knowledge, Alexis enrolled in The Academy Of Somatic Healing Arts (ASHA) in 2009, becoming certified in Neuromuscular Therapy, Sports Massage, Therapeutic deep tissue and Swedish massage.

Her mission is to create collaborative relationships with her clients for the pursuit of optimal holistic wellness. She brings this, alongside 6 years of massaging privately, to Aviary, and we are thrilled to have her on the team!

Alexis will be working Monday, Friday and Sunday. Christine Legnon will continue to be available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. To welcome and learn more about Alexis, as well as enjoy $10 off by booking your first appointment online, click here.

we flock to: the farmer fund launch party

At Aviary, we love few things more than our community. And our community is founded upon relationships with local and global farmers—they help us plant the seeds for your renewal by growing the bounty used in all of our products. So we were excited to learn about The Farmer Fund Launch Party, taking place this coming Monday, August 10. The Farmer Fund is a new nonprofit working to serve the Metro Atlanta farmers who feed our families. By focusing on serving farmers in the face of natural disaster, they keep farmers farming and our tables (and stomachs) full. So, in celebration of that, they’re kicking off in the only way they know how—food, community and fun. Lots of it.

The night will include everything from beer and food from local breweries and restaurants to an apron fashion show, live auction and live music from Athens-based band The Darnell Boys. All is included in the price of a ticket, as well as benefits The Farmer Fund, so head here to snag one for yourself. We hope to see you there!

get this summer's beach waves with these davines styling tips

Summer hair begs for easy mornings and natural locks. So, to make your daily hair routine that much easier, we turned to Aviary's newest stylist, Jenni Synder Renshaw, and asked how to get this summer's beachy wave. Look below for hair tips and inspiration photos from Jenni, and prepare to stock your beauty bag with Davines.

Hot for summer 2015 is the beachy wave. If you already have natural waves, you can enhance the texture with Davines' Sea Salt Spray. Just scrunch and go, and it will give your waves that tousled piecey look. Straight hair can be styled by blow drying with Sea Salt Spray or Volu (volumizing) Spray. Mist the root to give volume, then, with a large curling iron, alternate the direction of the curl to give it a less structured, more tousled look. You can also curl sections with a flat iron, keeping the roots sleek. If you want no heat waves, you can apply Davines' Invisible Serum to damp hair and braid. Wait for it to dry and simply run your fingers through to break up the waves. You can also apply Oi Oil to dry hair to control frizz and keep humidity at bay.

To bring your beach hair back to life after a long day, just spray some Hair Refresher at the root. Turn your head upside down, spritz roots and work it into the scalp with your fingertips. Flip, then lightly scrunch through the ends. It’s a dry shampoo that brings back the volume and gives your hair a “do over.”

july fourth essentials: cookouts, fireworks and sunscreen

We’re a few weeks into summer, and it’s getting hot out there. Thankfully, though, there are cookouts, beach trips and lake hangs on the horizon, especially with the Fourth of July being celebrated this weekend. With these festivities, it’s easy to jump into whatever body of water without a second thought, but, before you do, there’s one thing to remember—sunscreen. While winter may reak havoc on the skin via dryness, summer brings a whole new, ahem, ballgame, and giving it the care it needs is crucial. That’s why our friends over at Goop put together a collection of clean, feel good sunscreens to stay healthy (and not feel like a sticky coconut banana smoothie) on July Fourth. Featuring two of our favorites from Coola, Face SPF 30 in Unscented Matte Tint and Mineral Sport SPF 50 in Mango, these sunscreens are sure to make your summer days that much more worry free.

To grab one for yourself, visit us at Aviary, and pick out the perfect sunscreen for your skin. Here’s to enjoying your holiday weekend in good health and good company.

welcome to the nest: hairstylist jenni snyder renshaw

We are thrilled to announce that some incredible new talent has landed at the Aviary! Hairstylist Jenni Snyder Renshaw will begin creating her hair cut and color magic within our space, beginning immediately. Jenni is a Detroit native who spent her most recent years as the owner/operator of an award-winning, 5-star salon in Durham, North Carolina. She is Toni & Guy trained and a certified Davines colorist who also has experience working in film. Just this past week, Jenni had the opportunity to give a complete haircut overhaul to Atlanta PR and marketing expert Tucker Berta Sarkisian. Recently married, Tucker was looking for a new look post-wedding and opted for the Red Carpet-hot “wob” or “wavy bob.” Tucker says, “After wearing my long hair in a top knot for 363 of the last 365 days, it was time for a change.  I took Jenni a pic of Sienna Miller at the Golden Globes -- she took that, adapted it for my hair type and face shape, and it's perfect.  And - shockingly - it's as easy to do as the top knot."

Since she is new to town, Jenni is building her clientele, giving Atlantans a wonderful opportunity to have this in-demand talent transform their hair and keep their style at the forefront of current trends.

We are so glad to welcome Jenni and her skills into The Aviary family and to see what she creates with you!

Book your appointment online here now!

Sincerely,

Amy Leavell Bransford & Aviary {organic beauty collective}

happy mother's day from aviary

If there’s one thing we should celebrate, it’s mom. First, you wouldn’t be here without her (literally). Secondly, well, there’s just too many to count. From feeding you to loving you, she’s always been there, and that’s a reason to stop and take a moment. This year, we’re thinking of giving back to mom in the form of a little rest and relaxation. Whether it’s gifting a haircut to the woman who probably gave you your first (bowl shape not included), or a few minutes of solitude via a facial or massage, at Aviary, we have gift cards available for it all. Because, think about it, if anyone deserves a treat, it’s her.

Mothers, of course, take all different forms, too—from grandmas to role models to mother earth herself. So, whatever mom means to you, mark off Sunday, May 10 for her. We have. In the words of Mr. T, “She's a queen. Second to none. Take care of Mother. You only get one.”

feathered faves: kelly painter

You know how we feel about Intraceuticals (best thing ever.) When we first introduced the line at Aviary, we were smitten with both the in-spa benefits including the infamous oxygen facial, as well as the accompanying products. Intraceuticals’ magic spreads far beyond the treatment room, and that’s especially great for summer. Whether it’s a spring break getaway or a bachelorette weekend, we’re sure you have a vacation or two on the horizon. But, since a wild weekend or busy trip can wreak havoc on the skin, it’s important to take care of yourself on the road. That’s where Intraceuticals comes in. In our first installment of staff picks, we asked esthetician Kelly Painter her go-to product, and nod in agreement when she chose the essentials travel kit from Intraceuticals.

The travel kit has Intraceuticals’ philosophy on lockdown: revive, replenish, repeat. First, Rejuvenate Daily Serum sets deep hydration in motion, protecting you from dry vacation heat, as well as creating a canvas for later makeup application. The second product, Rejuvenate Hydration Gel, keeps the hydration going, and works with the Daily Serum to reduce signs of aging. And, the last goodie in the kit is Rejuvenate Moisture Binding Cream, which protects against free radicals (from here, to California to France), nourishes the skin and defends it throughout the day.

So, in celebration of upcoming vacations and healthy skin everywhere, Kelly is offering a facial deal alongside her pick. Mention this post to receive 10% off a facial with Kelly, or 20% for her first time clients. It’s just another way to say we appreciate you!

leaving the nest: salon vagabond

Dear Aviary & Salon Vagabond Clients, Transitions can be a challenge. But when handled gracefully, they can also pave way for something beautiful, a change necessary in order to grow.

Please join us in celebrating our time with Salon Vagabond. Over the next two months, Sidney, and then Jenn, will move on to begin a new adventure. Sidney and Jenn have built the foundation for a business at the Aviary and will move on to a neutral space to conceptualize it. They are two of the most talented stylists and friends that I have worked with and, though I’m sad to see them go, I am also excited to see what lies ahead for them.

Aviary is a wonderful and supportive place to evolve, an incubator for growth and talent in the beauty and wellness industry…and we have grown immensely with your support over the last five and a half years. We are excited about the future of the Aviary and what next great talent that we will be able to foster and work with.

Love always,

Amy (with Jenn, Sidney, Christine, Kelly & Hannah)

PS: Sidney and Jenn’s clients should expect to see a follow-up email from them about their future home.

Treat Your Lovebird This Valentine's Day with Our Gift Guide

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and so are all the things that come along with it. You know what we mean—everywhere from the local market to Lenox Mall is drenched in goodies for your sweetheart. But more and more, Valentine’s Day is moving away from the traditional and towards something a little more meaningful. Don’t get us wrong, we’re still talking indulgence, just not in a trying every chocolate in the box kind of way. Yep, this year our gift guide includes things to make your other half feel good—from our favorite at home treatment kit to any of our services or products:

1. Bkr Bottles - Bkr claims that their water bottle will “change the way you drink water forever,” and the funny thing is—it will. The little glass bottle was born out of a desire to get away from cheap, wasteful water bottles, instead drinking from something clean, reusable and stylish. Bkr isn’t only a bottle, though. It embodies a lifestyle, one that thrives on cool minimalism and all things pretty. A beauty essential, it’s perfect gift for the uber stylish, yoga pro, or, you know, anyone who drinks water. And with many Bkr bottles boasting a heart design, it’ll add a little oomph to your Valentine’s Day.

2. Intraceuticals Essentials Kit - From our favorite “no-tox botox” Rejuvenate range, the Intraceuticals Essentials Kit is the epitome of the line’s mantra: revive, replenish, repeat. First, the Rejuvenate Daily Serum deeply hydrates, instantly improving skin’s texture and creating the ideal canvas for later makeup application. Next is the Rejuvenate Hydration Gel, which further hydrates, working in tandem with the Daily Serum to visibly reduce signs of aging. Lastly is Rejuvenate Moisture Binding Cream. It protects against free radicals, continues to nourish and enrich the skin, as well as defends it throughout the day. All a lesson in Hyaluronic Layering, the Essentials Kit is a gift we’d love to give ourselves, so it’s perfect for your sweetheart.

3. Aviary Gift Card - When you think about it, it’s really the perfect gift—especially when a little pampering is involved. Whether you end up treating your other half or your bff to one of our services including a facial, haircut or massage, or any of our products (dreamy day creams from Dr. Hauschka or soothing serums from Sircuit, anyone?), it’s sure to make them smile.

So whether you’re looking for a loved one or you just want to treat yourself this year, we have you covered.

Happy Valentine’s Day, friends!

Aviary + BUFF Gilt Deals: A Resolution to Treat Yourself

The new year may not erase the past, but it does provide a primetime opportunity for renewal. And while it’s easy to watch your new year’s resolutions fall into the cracks, it doesn’t mean you can’t salvage a bit of self-improvement, new years or not. Our friends at Gilt City Atlanta recently introduced Rock the Resolution, deals to make whatever hasn’t fallen through the cracks that much easier to accomplish. And what’s a better resolution than a little R&R? Eh, we can’t come up with one. That’s why we’re thrilled to be featured alongside our bffs (and Studioplex neighbors) at BUFF.

We’re offering deals on our dream-worthy Rejuvenate Oxygen Infusion Facial, as well as our Alchemist and Smart Peel Facial. After your skin is in tiptop shape, BUFF is boasting $40 worth of nail services for $25 (you still have that tucked inside that one Christmas card, right?).

So grab your deals here, and have a happy new year. We can’t wait to see you in 2015.

no tricks, just treats: reward yourself with aviary's pumpkin facial

Alright, Atlanta. As you know, it’s pumpkin time. But pumpkin is not only for your porch or pie or, ahem, latte – it’s for your skin. All year around, we love our ALCHEMIST Smart Peel utilizing Sircuit's Youth Accelerator Pumpkin Enzyme Peel, but there’s something about the arrival of fall that makes it even better. And apart from it smelling good enough to eat, it comes loaded with healthy skin benefits.

By smartly targeting the skin’s receptors, the peel aids in getting rid of that icky free radical damage (which results in accelerated aging), and the power is really in the pumpkin. Concentrated pumpkin, or Cucurbita Pepo extract is rich in Beta Carotene and over 100 other nutrients. The other main ingredient, pumpkin ferment or Lactobacillus, works to exfoliate dead skin cells and impurities. All in all? It leaves your skin as vibrant as fall’s blue sky.

As a part of the facial, it’s a sure fire way to deeply cleanse pores, exfoliate and rehydrate. But seriously, don’t go eating it – we have a treat for you. If you show us this blog post upon receiving your Pumpkin Enzyme Peel, you’ll get $10 off, and, if you’re a member of Gilt City Atlanta, you can grab yourself the whole thing for $54 (not to mention the deals on Intraceuticals Rejuvenate + Atoxelene Oxygen Infusions and brow shaping that we’ve thrown in the treat basket as well).

Happy fall, friends!

nyfw hair trends to rock now

New York Fashion Week has a knack for inspiring us to rethink, well, everything. With all of the spring-fueled clothing, accessories and hair that gets sent down the runway, we can’t help it. And while we’re certainly looking forward to the hot cups of joe and big, cozy sweaters on fall’s horizon, we think we’ve caught a little spring 2015 in our step – or at least in our hair. What really stood out to us this past week were the ‘dos the designers choose to represent their collections. Three trends in particular seems to embody what the week was all about, and that’s refined, freeing style. Best of all? We can start rocking them right now.

If NYFW hung on to anything, it was the loose braid. From the windblown style at Michael Kors to the deconstructed herringbone braid at Suno, the updated classic was everywhere. And awesome every time. Our favorite may have even been the big disheveled braids at Baja East, which hairstylist Kevin Ryan described to Harper’s Bazaar as, “a nod to Peter Lindbergh girls – a girl who has traveled.” Birdlike, huh?

Another updated classic we couldn’t help but love was the bun. Tadashi Shoji sent a braided chignon down the runway, Altuzarra came up with a heart-shaped style and Carolina Herrera and Calvin Klein both gravitated towards Japanese-inspired knots.

And while both braids and buns stood their ground, one trend at NYFW was undeniable, and that’s the major ode the whole thing played to the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. From the hippie inspired frocks at Rebecca Taylor to the punk rock vibes, um, everywhere else, it definitely gave us a wealth of hair ideas. Maybe most notably was the mod mohawk at the Marc by Marc Jacobs show, but even the Marc Jacobs show proper paid homage to the era. A tribute to Joey Ramone, the models wore choppy black wigs and no makeup (another trend we can get behind). Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger and Zac Posen also presented some covetable rock ‘n’ roll vibes.

Time to get that NYFW DIY hair going!
